Making a world of difference through

A SUSTAINABLE FARM TO FEED

We have been planning for some time a larger project to offset our carbon footprint, and also create a sustainable farm project that can support our Chance to Learn recipients, families in need and our community. We are thrilled to share that we began purchasing land for this project in March of 2020, and have since obtained a beautiful 8.5 acre plot! We have surveyed, cleared, fenced, and made charcoal with clearing to provide firewood for cooking, and sell some to others to reinvest in this project. Beneficiaries are already involved in preparing the land, giving sweat equity toward that which will feed them.

Like all of our projects, we believe in a hand up rather than a hand out. Many of the families we support have the capacity to help themselves, but would never be able to accumulate the resources for the land. This long term project will be phased overtime. We have had several successful rotations or okra, maize, as well as first try with rice and yams. We have started an orchard of 270 fruit trees including mangos, oranges, avocados, plantains and papaya. Our fish pond is ready, with our first round of fingerlings released in 2023. We closed 2023 with harvesting 885 tilapia! See construction and release here.

In addition to sweat equity for farming, what is surplus beyond family needs, will be taken to market. Proceeds will be used to reinvest in the farm, as well as pay it forward for projects of need identified. So those who have received themselves, will also be able to pay it forward.

We look forward to updating and sharing more as we progress!!

Our second and third maize harvests yield slightly more than 2022. Our 2023 planting of 2.5 acres was entirely from our own seeds from 2022!! We will move forward in 2024 again with our own seeds.

We closed 2023 with our second yam harvest of 1,320 yams, increasing our yield by 500. Of our 3 largest yields- maize, yams, and tilapia- we GAVE 21%, and reinvested via market sales 60%, and saving seeds 18%!
